In the home, the shower drain outlet comes into contact with water, hair, and soap scum. In commercial settings, the load is greater. Hotel guests may rinse off the sunscreen, shampoo residue, and body oils of dozens of people. Therefore, the design of the drain and the arrangement of the grating need to be able to handle a wider variety of substances while avoiding clogging.

The drainage system of a home bathroom requires water seals, correct ground slopes, and ventilation, which are all simple requirements. The specifications for commercial bathrooms are more complex and add more requirements. Floor drains in public restrooms may need sealants added to prevent the water seal from drying out when no one is using it for a long time.
